Ivy Johnson
Illustration Fellowship
creating editorial art for Fatherly
When I first came to New York, I struggled to find a way into the media industry. I didn’t know anyone who could help me find a job, and though I had several year’s experience working with photo shoots and editing photos, I didn’t have an internship on my resume. I ended up pitching and creating my own internship at Chronogram, and from there I was able to get more photo work with Real Simple, and Shutterstock.
A few jobs later, when I was given an art budget to manage at Fatherly, one of the first things I did was to establish an illustration fellowship. I brought early-career artists into the office three days a week for twelve weeks each, to sit at my work pod and produce 6-10 illustrations a week. It was such an inspiring and fulfilling experience– I’m so grateful to all the fellows I had the pleasure of working with for teaching me how much mentoring means to me.
